Tabla Classes in New Jersey

with Dibyarka Chatterjee

About the instructor: Dibyarka Chatterjee is the son and disciple of Pandit Samir Chatterjee, a Tabla maestro from the Farrukhabad Gharana. Dibyarka has been performing since childhood with some of most renowned musicians of India (both in India & US). He is a full-time performer and teacher of Indian music, and holds a MFA degree on Indian music. Many of his students have begun performing already and are being recognized for their skill and knowledge. Dibyarka learned from his father in the ancient system of guru-shishya parampara (master-disciple tradition), and the same system is the foundation of his own teaching methodology. Students Learn:
  • The different parts of the Tabla, description of strokes etc.
  • Basic strokes & exercises & language of Tabla
  • Compositions with increasing complexity
  • Taal-s / Tala-s : structure, playing, reciting
  • History & theory of Tabla and North Indian music
  • The technical & aesthetic concepts required for improvisation.
  • Basic-to-advanced accompaniment (playing to chanting, prayer, non-devotional music & eventually classical & semi-classical music).
  • And much more (students' personal goals are always taken into consideration).

Will I need to purchase my own Tabla-s?
Yes, each student must have their own drums when they come for the first lesson. Additionally, they will need to bring to each lesson a binder, pen/pencil & (if they choose) recording device.

How do group classes work?
Group classes are generally 3-5 in size with each student receiving individual attention. Students are given material and exercises based on their own level, skill & progress. They are not expected to keep pace with others or follow a uniform curriculum. This is how Indian music is traditionally taught; with the intention of developing concentration and focus, as well as motivating (by giving students a glimpse of what lies ahead).

What if a registration period has started, and I have missed classes, should I still join/start?
Yes absolutely; classes are grouped into 'sessions' for convenience of advanced payment and registration. There is no fixed schedule for the curriculum taught, and any student of any level can join anytime.

What if I miss a group class I've already paid for?
If the student is unable to attend a class, there is no refund, credit  or make-up option. If the instructor has to cancel a class due to any reason, he will try to reschedule the class or offer an option for a make-up class. If a student is unable to commit to the rescheduled class, he or she will be credited for it.
